MOSES Clergy Caucus' Position on Mass Transit

A Moral Statement of Support
Of An Improved Transportation System in Southeastern Michigan

The MOSES Clergy Caucus maintains that there are religious/spiritual values held in common by all faith traditions that beg communities to develop and maintain effective transportation systems in order to enhance the quality of life and give to all people convenient and affordable access to a wide variety of regional resources, and entertainment and recreational centers.

We are commanded to:

    1. Build community
    2. Care for the poor and the less privileged
    3. Protect God's resources as part of a global community

These values from our faith traditions, and the responsibilities inherent in our affirmed covenant with God, make our concern for an improved transportation system a moral issue. Because transportation is so vital to one's personal well-being and to the well-being of our community, we content that the development and maintenance of a rapid transit system in Southeastern Michigan is not only necessary, it is the right thing to do. We are commanded, each within our own traditions, to engage the world with justice and righteousness and loving kindness. We are taught and we believe that doing the right thing produces benefits for all. And, regarding this issue of equitable, available and efficient transportation, we believe that social improvements can be gained from an improved mass transit system.

We need a mass transit system that:

    1. Stimulates the economy
    2. Provides an affordable alternative to outrages gas prices
    3. Provides cleaner air
    4. Gives independence to seniors and peace of mind to parents
    5. Connects communities
    6. Improves the quality of life

A Call To
ACTION

Write your Michigan Senator and Representative Today!

Urge your state legislators to make transit a top priority. Ask your state legislators to support major investments in public transit, so that our communities can have the high quality transit systems they deserve, and receive the economic development and job creation benefits that transit systems create:

Explain why transit is important to you, with reasons like:

    1. High gas prices
    2. Great transit experience in other cities
    3. Clean air and global warming prevention
    4. Connected communities

Include aspects of transit that you care about the most, such as:

    1. Bus improvements which includes efficiency, coordination and regionally friendly
    2. Light rail along Woodward from Downtown Detroit to 8 Mile and beyond
    3. Light rail along I-94 from Detroit to Ann Arbor with a stop at Metro Airport.

Stay abreast of transportation public policies and proposed plans

Transportation has become a "hot" topic with soaring gas prices in the United States. So, stay abreast of transportation policies and proposed plans:

H.R. 6052 "The Savings Energy Trough Public Transportation Act of 2008"
(S.E.P.T.A. 2008)

To promote increased public transportation use, to promote increased use of alternative fuels in providing public transportation, and for other purposes.
