"In the spirit of
Dr. King, we remain committed to the work and the people who will be blessed because we "fought the good fight."

"We remain thankful for the work and ministry and faith of Dr. King, and now it is our turn to "run our leg" in the race for justice, equity and equality. It still is our responsibility to make his Dream and ours a Reality!"

MOSES is organized to build an interfaith, multiracial, congregation-centered community organization that will address issues of concern to community residents and members of member congregations through a process of relationship building, training and leadership development, and direct action.

MOSES congregations cooperate as core teams, action clusters, a metropolitan organization, and in affiliation with other congregation-centered community organizations within the Gamaliel Foundation.

Our goal is to build and strengthen our member congregations and to empower these congregations to strengthen local communities to bring about beneficial systemic change.

Mission Statement

MOSES is a congregation-centered, faith-based community organization reflecting the religious, racial and ethnic diversity of Metropolitan Detroit.

MOSES is a vehicle by which congregations of faith come together to develop a network of relationships, to identify common interests, and to exercise power on behalf of those interests. Through MOSES we assert our religious principles in the public realm to improve the quality of life in our communities and to create a more just and humane society.

MOSES Vision Statement

MOSES Shares the vision of Isaiah (61:1-2a, 3b-4)

"The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me.

  • He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
  • To bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners...
  • They shall be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display His glory.
  • They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations.
  • They shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of the many generations."

Our Purpose

As a community of congregations of faith, MOSES is motivated by a common understanding that each person is a part of a humanity created by God.

We are a faith community compelled by the prophetic mandate to "do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly before God."

This we seek not merely for ourselves or for those who are members of our congregations, but for our entire community, who we see, through our faith, as members of the brotherhood and sisterhood of all humanity.

Because faith must be accompanied with action, our faith mandates that we strive together to pursue the goals we believe are keeping with the design of God. These goals include:

Justice - for all, without regard to race, gender, social status or religion

Respect for the Dignity of each person - more than a mere respect for life, it is the acknowledgment that each one of us bears the image of God.

Mercy - understanding that there are times and circumstances when laws and guidelines have both a letter and a "spirit".

Fairness - the expectation that society's laws, policies and procedures will be administered in an equitable fashion.

Civility - our desire is a society where each of us respects the rights and humanity of others, and behaves in a fashion worthy of respect.

Kindness - we participate in the building of a true "community" marked by friendliness, generosity, sympathy and tolerance.

Because we begin from the position of faith in God, we are confident that we are working and walking side by side, under the guidance of God. We are participating in a movement necessitated, even commanded by God to take responsibility for the quality of life of our brothers and sisters. Thus, we actively involve ourselves in social and community issues such as:

Equitable allocation and distribution of public funds

Equal opportunities for quality public education

Equal access to public transportation

Equal opportunity for full and meaningful employment

Safe and healthy neighborhoods in which to live

It is to this charge and challenge that we seek to rise and work, for the good of our community, our society, our children and for theirs'.
